FINALLY! (really)
I'll start with yesterday because it was important and is the freshest in my mind.
So mom had a business trip to DC Saturday and Monday, so she decided to fly the 40-minute plane ride up here in between to visit me! She got here on campus at around 9:30 and called me from the parking lot and I leaned out the window and asked her what kind of car did she rent and it was RED so I saw her and said look up at the farthest window on the top floor, I can see you! So she found me. Then I had to get dressed to go down and get her because if you're not a Pratt student you have to have someone bring you in and if you're not in my dorm you have to leave you ID regardless. So I went to her car and gave her a big hug and she brought me tons of stuff, an art box I'd left at home, notebooks, etc. as well as a computer! So we brought it all up to my room and I made her a bagel and I felt all hostess-like except you gotta tack on college student to that because really it was a 20 cent bagel hehe. We stayed around my room for a while, her figuring out the airport here (because we have wireless) and me figuring out the camcorder I rented for my current film project. And we decided where to go.
So my film project due today at 1:00 when I have class was to do an in-camera edit. Usually, she doesn't want us to do that or do ANYTHING to the tapes besides record when they're in the camera because it's really easy to mess up the time code, which makes editing problematic. But I'll explain all that later. So my project was to take quick shots of a bunch of things, all together at least 3:00 minutes long, but it could be as long as you want. So mine is about 5 because I was having fun. So then you go back into what you've recorded and decide where you want to record over with something different. It can be random, or it can be very precise, it depends on what you're doing and what you're aiming for. Same with the shots, they can be very calculated or not so much, all different lengths, or all the same in each round. They couldn't ALL be the same or it really wouldn't work.... maybe... Anyways, so then you go back through your first round of quick shots, recording in a set of new quick shots. And then you do it a third time. Ideally, you'd do it about a million times, but 3 was what she said would work well for this assignment. So that was the assignment simply, record three sets of shots. That was it, and then you could decide how you wanted to interpret that, and there are lots of different ways. So I decided to make each set of shots that had things in common. The first was me and mom leaving to get where we were going. I took longer shots of that so that I could do shorter shots for the next few and I'd still see a lot of the leaving part and not record over it all. Then I recorded over little parts with where we went... We went to where the Brooklyn Bridge meets Brooklyn. I can't remember what the place is called. It was really cool and it worked well. Then we went down to this little pizza shop and ate pizza with basil and roasted red peppers and onions and I ate it for breakfast just now! And in the pizza shop was my third set of shots, and I did those uber quick so they just flash in. But as you can see, all three rounds had their own theme, so it ends up telling the story of us leaving and the two places we went. I think it worked out pretty well. =D If you have any questions on that assignment, it was rather difficult to explain, and I can try to explain it better with specific questions if you're curious.
So anyways, I'd planned on doing film and photography while mom was here because it was actually only the 5th time I've ever left the damn campus since I've been here! Serious. I know. So I cranked out my other mounds of homework on Thursday, my day off, and Saturday. I didn't quite finish, but I don't feel bad because I work really really hard and for HOURS! But I'll get there. So yea, we took the subway to where ever we went, and it was really pretty. We could look over the water and see Staten Island (I think) to the left, the Brooklyn Bridge to the right, and Manhattan across. It was nice. I took pictures and did my recordings. Then at about 1, we walked down to that pizza place, and it was super cool because it was really just a little family owned type shop, tiny but PACKED! Then we headed back and there were all these couples getting wedding pictures taken with the bridge! It was defiantly a sight haha. And there was this little ice cream shop, but we'd eaten so much pizza! And we were mad. But then the chef cam out and started talking to us, he was really friendly and really persuasive, so we went in! He told us Rachel Ray and food network in general had been there at least 40 times and that it was super good ice cream with the finest ingredients. And boy, it was. I saw Scharfen Burgur (sp?) chocolate sitting waiting to be used! So we shared a small Coffee chocolate chunk! And man, I love coffee ice cream, and it was really the best I've ever had. He wasn't kidding. So now I know a good spot to take someone if i need to =). He was asking us where we were from and stuff and liked my rainbow umbrella and my camera =).
So then we came back to my dorm to drop off my camcorder because I was done, and to get the car to go to target to get FOOD and shelves for my desk. My room was a mess! We drove over and got Cereal, the best kind ever HEART TO HEART BY KASHI! BUY IT! and I don't usually like Kashi at all... and oatmeal and luna bars and all that goodness I need in my room. and we got a box to put in all in. We were gunna get shelves, but they were heavy and expensive, so we didn't. So then we came back and completely cleaned up my room and now it feels all nice! We put a bunch of stuff under the bed and it's all organized and I don't even need shelves after all! It feels so nice to be organized. Whew. So then Mom helped me study some Art History, considering I have to have 90 images memorized by class on Friday, as well as read the next chapter. So she had to leave at around 10:00 because she had to get to her hotel and sleep and fly back to DC early this morning. I gave her my cookbooks to take back home because we don't have an oven, which is super sad =(. So we said bye and I had a really really fun day with her! She's coming back in about 3 weeks because she'll be here in New York anyways because she's helping write this year’s Chemistry AP Test! I know. So that'll be cool, this time she'll be here for more than a day! And Dad's supposed to be coming really soon too, but I don't know when because he hasn't gotten the tickets yet, but I can't wait to see him even if it isn't until Thanksgiving, when everyone's coming here and we're driving up to Ithaca to see Uncle Joe! I'm really excited to see everyone and see Ithaca.
So I've worked it out, I have 8 weeks until a week long break, then 3 until my 3-4 week winter break, then 8 until my week long spring break, and then 7 until summer! So it's all not too bad! This first stretch is the longest for sure, but since I've already gotten through 4 weeks of school, it's only an 8-week stretch left. It's all going to go by so fast! And Tommy was telling me about his Jazz performance which he thinks is in March, which I really really wanted to go to but I thought I'd miss but maybe now it'll coincide with my Spring break! Yay! So point is, it was really fun to see mom, and now I'm going to start a new entry with a new topic.
